LDEC is a coalition of Londoners who believe that our city’s economy should be fairer and greener. We originally came together during COVID-19 pandemic through a shared ambition to create a better economy. We are now a CIC with over 200 members from all walks of London life.
We believe that a thriving London economy should provide all Londoners a minimum standard of living, and that this can be achieved whilst working within the planet’s ecological and environmental limits. We argue that, as one of the most influential and important cities in the world, London can be a leader in adopting better, fairer, and regenerative approaches to its economy. We support this through a mix of wide ranging conversation, practical system testing projects, and collaboration with decision-makers. We enable others; we are optimistic and we love our city.
London is a fantastic and dynamic city. It’s an economic powerhouse and known all over the world for its cultural life and diversity. But is it really thriving and are all Londoners sharing in this success?
Poverty and inequality in London are growing rather than shrinking. As London’s economic growth slows to a rate below other UK cities, it is those living around the poverty line who are most impacted by lower wages and high house, food, energy and childcare costs. According to government statistics, London is now the most income deprived city in England.
At the same time, the city’s environmental footprint is immense and is contributing to ecological breakdown, not just in our city, but in the rest of the world. The experience of climate and ecological crisis is vastly different depending on location and community, meaning we need to find a way to act locally whilst recognising our global impact and responsibilities.
London needs a better way of thinking and talking about its economy, where the city and its neighbourhoods can thrive regardless of whether or not the economy grows. We need an approach that offers a more optimistic future for people, which asks some fundamental questions of our current system.
What if we were to redefine our measures of economic success... what different decisions would we make?
What if London’s institutions made decisions that recognised the impact on people’s lives and the future of the planet?
What if we embraced an economy of purpose which recognises its influence over the wellbeing of all people?
LDEC is already asking these questions and has support in all walks of London life and all levels of government and business. The challenge now is to capitalise upon this moment, demonstrate new practice and make it the norm.
A thriving London should no longer be a byproduct of a system over which we have little control. It should be the fundamental outcome of processes and action which elevate London further as a prosperous, safe, welcoming, innovative, happy and healthy city.
The potential is huge and the outcomes exciting - We have the momentum, we just need you. Join the community here.

We have an active group of team leaders that run each coalition hub. We also have a board to fulfil our CIC duties who help steer us. We are always looking for extra support running the ship - please let us know if you have time and skills to spare.
